PROCEDURE TO APOSTILLE FOREIGN DOCUMENTS

Any document issued in a foreign country needs to be legalized in order to be recognized as legal document in Uruguay. The legalization procedure consists of stamping the document with the Hague Apostille stamp.

The competent authority to legalize documents with the Apostille, depends on which country has issued the document:

Sweden: Public Notary

Denmark: Ministry for Foreign Affairs

Norway: The County Governors (Fylkesmannen) and the Royal Norwegian Ministry for Foreign Affairs

After having been stamped with the Apostille, the document should be translated into Spanish, in order to be valid for its use in Uruguay. The translation is done by an official translator in Uruguay (other translations are not accepted). If possible, it is recommendable to obtain the document in English, in order to facilitate the translation. Remember that both the document itself and the Apostille stamp should be translated.

The interested party is responsible for legalizing and translating the document, as well as to bring the document to Uruguay.
